10/20/08 The arrest comes four years after a fatal car accident on the Merrit Parkway in New Canaan caused by Benzyk, which involved traces of drugs

Darien Times

A Darien man involved in a fatal car accident four years ago was arrested last week for driving while intoxicated.

Charles Benzyk, 25, of Heather Lane was arrested at 1:12 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, after a traffic stop on Noroton Avenue. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to illuminate headlights.

Officers stopped Benzyk’s 2008 Honda Fit while he was driving south on Noroton Avenue near the Post Road without any headlights on, according to Darien police Capt. Fred Komm.

The officers detected an odor of alcohol coming from Benzyk, Komm said, and administered a field sobriety test which he failed. Benzyk was released after posting a $250 bond and is due in court on Oct. 22.

Benzyk’s attorney, Eugene Riccio of Bridgeport-based Gulash & Riccio, said his client’s latest arrest was due to an unfortunate circumstance, but he wouldn’t elaborate.

“It’s a most regrettable situation in that Mr. Benzyk was attempting to help out another person in a difficult situation and as a result of his efforts, he wound up getting in trouble himself,” Riccio said.......

10/20/08 Ginna Jones Of Darien Wants To Know

EarthTalk: Immigration and the Environment

Dear EarthTalk: Why are some environmental groups jumping on the immigration issue? What does immigration have to do with the environment?

-- Ginna Jones, Darien, CT

Westport, CT - E/The Environmental Magazine -- infoZine

What to do about booming legal and illegal immigration rates is one of the most controversial topics on Americans' political agenda these days. More than a million immigrants achieve permanent resident status in the U.S. every year. Another 700,000 become full-fledged American citizens. The non-profit Pew Research Center reports that 82 percent of U.S. population growth is attributable to immigration.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that U.S. population will grow from 303 million people today to 400 million as early as 2040. While many industrialized nations, including Japan and most of Western Europe, are experiencing population growth slowdowns due to below replacement birth levels and little immigration, the U.S. is growing so fast that it trails only India and China in total numbers.

Advocates for U.S. population stabilization, including some environmental organizations and leaders, fear that this ongoing influx of new arrivals is forcing the nation to exceed its "carrying capacity," stressing an already overburdened physical infrastructure. David Durham of Population-Environment Balance says that Americans who care about the environment should insist on reducing immigration, to recognize "ecological realities such as limited potable water, topsoil and infrastructure." He also cites studies showing that a permissive U.S. immigration policy drives up fertility rates in the sending countries "which is the last thing these sending countries need."

To others the problem is larger than immigration itself. "People don't just materialize at our border, or at any border," says John Seager of Population Connection. "When you talk about immigration, you're talking about the second half of a process that begins when people decide to leave their homes." And they are usually leaving their homes because of hunger, lack of work, oppression, or any number of other often-desperate reasons. Seager and many others argue that by helping poor nations better address the economic and family planning needs of their citizens, Americans can not only help improve the lot of millions of people living in dire poverty, but also slow down the tide of immigration.

Groups focusing on the immigration-environment nexus are keen to get their voices heard, but many mainstream green groups shun the highly divisive topic, preferring instead to encourage Americans, who are infamous around the world for their huge homes, gas-guzzling cars and extravagant consumption habits, to curb their unsustainable lifestyles, which they see as more fundamental to U.S. environmental problems than population pressures. With just five percent of the world's people, Americans use a quarter of the world's fossil fuels, own more private cars than drivers with licenses, and live in homes that are on average 38 percent larger today than they were in 1975. By scaling back, Americans can take a big bite out of pollution, sprawl and other environmental problems, while also setting a good example for those who land in the U.S. every year, lowering the nation's collective carbon footprint significantly in the process.

1019/08 READER SUBMITTED COMMENTS: Our Police

OUR POLICE

A few months ago, a young man from Darien lost his life in a tragic way. He was a blond haired, blue-eyed, former lax star at the Darien High School, attending a local college. His family is known by many as just one of those families who are just GREAT PEOPLE.

The young man was reported missing and, within 24 hours, his body was found in New Canaan at Waveny Park. The search had ended...the result, every parent's (family and friends included)nightmare.

The Darien Police and the New Canaan Police worked quickly and diligently on the "missing persons" notification. They should be commended for their swift action, despite the unfortunate conclusion.

However, a police officer from Darien, gave a comment to the press on the same day of the sad discovery. She didn't leave it as "it is under investigation," which would be the prudent response in this case, BUT RATHER ended with "the young many had a history of mental illness."

Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but I think if something is "under investigation," enough said. Especially if there is no reason to suspect criminal activity. There is no need to add speculation or plant negative ideas. This police officer set the stage for weeks of unnecessary gossip, while a family and town was in mourning.

I suppose the report could have remained as a matter of "public record" at the police station like a hundred others do, instead of part of the news coverage in the Darien Times and Stamford Advocate..

There is a time and a place for publicity, and there is a time and a place for tact and respect.

If the young man was hit by an unidentified driver and killed (as in the tragic case of Joey, of Greenwich), then that should be the time for full accountability.....bombs away!!!!!

I don't understand why these two-bit town newspapers and some of their police consistantly make such horrific public mistakes.

But I have to wonder why we put up with it. There is either too much information, (commonly WRONG) or no information at all.

I'm happy to find Darien News, written as it should be, here ON LINE. I'm also happy we can add our thoughts and comments.

Thank you for including our town of Darien, in the Greenwich Roundup.

Mike G.

Comment:

Dear Mike,

I have been surprised at the quick response and interest that Darien Citizen's have had in Darien Roundup. I must confess that I do not know much about Darien and am very dependent on Letter Writers and citizen journalists such as yourself.

Mike you seem to be very informed. You are clearly aware of what is going on in Greenwich, New Canaan, as well as, Darien. I should be as well finformed as you are. Soon we hope to add New Canaan Roundup and Stamford Roundup.

Darien seems starved for local news and a local forum. It is odd that the mainstream media would ignore such a rich and vibrant community as Darien.

Please continue to contribute to Darien Roundup and I will try and do a better job of finding and updating the news.

Later I will add permeate links to Darien Roundup from Greenwich Roundup. I am sure that their are many Darien residents who used to live or have family in Greenwich. There are probably many Greenwich residents that work in Darien.

There are many ties between Darien and Greenwich. For example two out of the three local newspapers are owned by Hearst Newspapers. We have The Time and citizen and you have the Advocate and News-Review.

10/14/08 Reader Submitted Comments: Responce To Darien Dig And Cheating

To Darien Roundup,

I was under the impression Darien ranks in the top third of the state with regard to academic excellence, but looking at the rankings that isn't true. Wilton is usually on top, followed by schools north of Fairfield County.

As a teacher in a Catholic school, we have a 2 strike policy on cheating. The first time a student is caught, they are given an automatic "F" The second time, they are sent to find another school. My colleagues at other schools say many teachers simply "look the other way" when they notice cheating. The reason is that lower grades reflect on the teacher's ability to teach. Parents complain, and the Administration caves in. Others claim, as in Stamford Public schools, if they penalized every "cheater" they would have to penalize the entire school. So, the Administration has a part too. It is politics, aka, who knows who. It seems politics are everywhere they shouldn't be.

It is a sad commentary on education when I read this. This type of cheating now is not limited to the old "crib sheets" It is blatantly getting the tests in advance, using another students (from past years) typed reports, and even having others take the tests for them. With the faculty aware? Yes.

I have heard,in the case of standardized tests, students can "buy" another student to take his/her test and student IDs are altered. I have to wonder why a student from Greenwich drives to Ridgefield to take the ACT when it is given in Greenwich on the same day and time. They don't. They have a friend drive up there where no one knows them and it is a done deal.

Are we raising a generation who is lazy and dishonest?

R. K.

10/13/08 Todays Darien Mystery Blogger: The Descerning Darien Dig

As October winds down, Darien High School seniors are putting the finishing touches on those college applications.

Who's going where, who applied early decision, who filled out collegiate sport profiles, and who had done absolutely nothing?

It's "those who have done nothing" we need to focus on.

Here, in Darien, we have the reputation of very good college placements.

The question is, did we REALLY earn it?

Every fall, right about this time, students have just finished taking their last SAT exam. Last weekend, in fact. Their scores are still unknown, even to them. How is that some students already know they have been accepted to outstanding colleges, while others anxiously await the news to arive in WELL OVER a month? Early decision applications are due Nov. 15. Therefore, it should follow no one knows YET where they have been accepted.

Not so fast.....Darien appears to an exeption. A very unfair acception, as well. Wait a sec, DARIEN PAYS TO BE THE EXCEPTION!!!! Maybe.

Fact: Georgetown accepts our "marginally" talented athletes that take either "200" (below average or perform poorly in "300" (average) classes.

Fact: FCIAC is the Fairfield County Athletic Conference. It is a joke compared with the athletic conferences in NJ and on LI,NY, and of course it is laughable if you compare Darien's little school with high school athletics nation wide.In other words, Darien is Smallville. But as we see, our kids probably have nicer uniforms, fields and equipment.....$$$$$$$$ They get brand new ones every single year!!!!!

Fact: Georgetown is almost impossible to get into for any student who has a 4.0 average, excellent SATs, and no varsity sport affiliation. It never fails to amaze me, that our top graduating 25 students do not go there, but a few of our bottom 25 do.....$$$$$$$

Fact: Last year, Darien High School Juniors who missed final exams, were given "C"s........not "F"s........and they could choose to take a "C" or take the exam. Some exams account for 50% of the final grade. How is this fair? Back when I was in high school I would have sold my soul for a "C" on the Chem final....or the chance to blow it off and head to the beach.

Fact: The double standards the Darien High School exercises ACROSS the board, is impossible to defend. Who gets in AP classes resembles a lottery. One student gets in, another with the same grade, doesn't. In Stamford, students may chose an AP class, and withdraw after 2 weeks if it is too difficult. In Darien, you must be among the "CHOSEN"

Has it occurred to anyone else that there must be ways of cheating on the SATss, the ACTs, and therefore colleges are beginning to look beyond standardized test scores?

Well, I can say without a doubt at least 70% of Dariens high school students cheat in their classes. And even if they are caught, there is literally no penalty to pay. So, what do I say to my high school student when they ask me:

  • "how can I compete w/this?"
  • "why is this happening?"
  • "it's not fair I studied for 8 hours and got a B-, and the rest of my friends didn't spend more than 45 minutes, cheated, and got an A"
I am almost tempted to say "CHEAT" (I know all the tricks, having done some myself way back when). But cheating is like a disease that grows.....it begins to creep into other areas of life......and it is inherently wrong.

My reply, straining to sound optimistic,, was "I'm proud of you that you haven't stooped to that level and can still look at yourself in the mirror."

Gosh, lately, I have trouble believing this is MY KID. Was there a switch at birth? Or could it be I was REALLY being listened to as I repeated the words of "Parenting 101?"

And I always complain I'm being ignored..... Or no one hears me.....

There is much more than meets the eye at the Darien High School. I'm not sure the dishonesty and deception occurs in Greenwich, New Canaan, Stamford, and Norwalk.......but I'd sure like to know.

It is something that needs some investigating........and all comments are welcome as we start looking at the Darien Dreams vs Darien Reality.

More to come......
