06/23/10 Conservative Cuban American Seeks To Replace Liberal Congressman Jim Himes

RICK TORRES STIRS EMOTIONS

BY LENNIEGRIMALDI

If you like your politics conservative, fiscally and socially, Rick Torres fits both.

Rick is a passionate pol who stirs passionate responses. He has qualified for the ballot to challenge GOP-endorsed State Senator Dan Debicella, a Bridgeport native, in an August primary the winner to face Fourth District Democratic Congressman Jim Himes. Rob Merkle, of Norwalk, founder of an executive search firm in Westport, has also qualified for the August primary. Merkle is a favorite of some Tea Party types, such as it is in Fairfield County. So who’s Rick Torres?

(See a snapshot of his bio below.) Torres lives in Black Rock and operates Harborview Market, a popular neighborhood gathering spot. Rick toiled in Bridgeport Democratic politics for a while as an outsider. He was so outside as an establishment fighter that it was better to become a Republican. In 2003 he almost became mayor, losing the general election to John Fabrizi who had become chief executive following Joe Ganim’s resignation following his conviction on corruption charges.

The early fall of 2003 was dicey for Democrats. The electorate was angry, Fabrizi had served as city council president while Ganim was mayor, Mario Testa was party leader. Fabrizi survived a tough primary against Caruso and others. As the general election closed in Republican and Democratic polls showed the race was even. That’s not good for Dems who enjoy a major registration advantage. Testa decided it would be good to resign to take heat off Fabrizi. The editorial board of the Connecticut Post did not believe Rick had the right temperament to be mayor. A statement Rick made about the minority community lifting themselves up was interpreted as insensitive. Fabrizi won the election.

Rick did not go away, nor did his controversial swagger. In the summer of 2007 Rick, as the local GOP chair, endorsed Democratic State Rep. Chris Caruso, the mayoral primary challenger to party-endorsed Bill Finch, arguing the best way to cleanse the city’s Democratic political system was to get behind the guy who’d powerwash it into the Pequonnock River. Local Republicans threw a fit over Rick endorsing a Dem and removed Torres as party leader.

When challengers emerged this year to take on Himes, former State Senator Rob Russo had the majority of the Bridgeport GOP support. Undeterred, Torres jumped in as well claiming the throne of conservatism. Russo’s campaign never took flight, Debicella’s fundraising efforts and district-wide campaigning propelled him to the party endorsement. Taking out Debicella is a tall task. He has money and organizational support. But he must safeguard his money for the general election. Torres has a history of whistling to his own tune. He won’t go away quietly. He has been endorsed by economic guru Peter Schiff who’s trying to slay GOP-endorsed Linda McMahon for the right to challenge Dick Blumenthal in November.

From Rick Torres:

Rick Torres, who is running for the Republican nomination in Connecticut’s 4th District, the seat currently held by Jim Himes, has issued the following statement on the Secretary of State’s announcement regarding ballot qualifiers today. Torres is excited to have his ideas aired alongside those of fellow Republicans Robert Merkle and Dan Dibecella.

“This is going to be an exciting race and, I believe, a definitive race for the nation. The voters of Connecticut’s Fourth have clear choices between a candidate who has as his base, the Republican establishment and a candidate who has the support of some of the louder voices in the Tea Party movement. In me they have a third choice: a candidate who derives his support from regular folks across the District who just simply want to be left alone to raise their families and run their businesses.

“I have struggled and fought from the time that my family fled Cuba and have risen from the oppression of the public housing system to have my name on a ballot for United States Congress. It is really quite an honor and I am happy that the voters had the faith in me to sign my nomination papers.

“It is an interesting year to be in a race. So many want to hold on to their power and others are just swinging wildly because they are angry. We need a reasoned dialogue with the people because it is their lives and their freedoms that are at stake here. Insiders must put aside their allegiances and some in the debate must tone down their anger. We need to come up with real solutions to restore our nation to her place as a shining light for democracy around the globe.”

Torres, who was born in Bridgeport, moved back to his family’s native Cuba when he was a young boy. It took his father five years after Fidel Castro came to power to secure permission to return to America’s shores. In 1967, Rick and his brother were brought back to Bridgeport—with not much more than the clothes on their backs. The family lived across from the PT Barnum Public Housing Project and Torres worked his way through college in a series of construction trades jobs. He eventually studied for a PhD in microbiology but, like many folks, had to quit graduate school in order to support his young family.

Torres and Michelle, his wife of 27 years, started a series of small businesses, working double shifts for years. Eventually, they bought Harborview Market: a once thriving neighborhood store which had fallen on desperate times. Harborview is once again a successful business and was the site of today’s press conference.

In 2003, Rick ran for Mayor of Bridgeport on the Republican Ticket. Prior to his Mayoral run, Rick took an active role in a number of neighborhood and community organizations, and ran for several local government offices. Rick and Michele have five children: John, Alex, Michael, Kaitlyn, and Gabbi. They live in Bridgeport.

06/15/10 Dan Debicella: Greenwich Resident And CT Congressman Jim Himes Soft On Supporting Israel

Dear friends,

Recent reporting in the Jewish Ledger on June 9th indicates just how unwilling Jim Himes is to take a strong position in support of Israel. The full story can be found at www.jewishledger.com.

It is clear that we need a Congressman who is unequivocal in his support for Israel. Jim Himes says he supports Israel, but then is unwilling to take a strong stand to support our ally when they are most in need. The United States needs to support Israel as they work to secure their borders and stop weapons from reaching terrorist groups like Hamas. Fairfield County deserves a Congressman who will speak strongly and clearly for our allies in Israel.

These are the contrasting statements reported in the Jewish Ledger:

REP. JIM HIMES (D)

“Israel is our good friend and our only long term ally in a dangerous part of the world. As Americans we do not rush to judgment before we have the facts. As tragic as the situation in the Mediterranean is, I urge all parties involved to do all they can to reduce tension and to allow the facts to be examined.”

DAN DEBICELLA (R)

"The United States needs to back Israel as it tries to secure its borders against terrorist groups like Hamas. They have a right to stop ships to ensure no weapons are being moved into the Gaza Strip. Israel is trying to reach out to moderate Palestinians to reach a lasting peace, yet the extremists in Hamas continue to try and pick a fight with Israel. I firmly believe the U.S. should stand with our allies in Israel and promote the removal of terrorist organizations like Hamas from power."

I will continue to advocate for the Israeli people and for their right to defend themselves from extremism. You can help me today by making a contribution of $25, $50, or $100 or by volunteering with the campaign. Together we can defeat Jim Himes and restore common sense to Washington.

All my best,

-Dan

In 4th District Race, Grassroots Canidate Rick Torres Goes Against The Grain

The Fourth Congressional Race In Fairfield County Connecticut

Source: CT Post

Genevieve Reilly, Staff Writer
Published 09:44p.m., Saturday, April 24, 2010

Rick Torres CT Post Photo BRIDGEPORT -- Rick Torres may be considered an anomaly by some. Not only is he a Republican in a city where Democrats outweigh the GOP faithful, he's a Latino Republican.

On a warm spring morning, Torres, 51, sits at a table outside the Harborview Market, the business he owns in the neighborhood where he lives, talking about the life experiences that shaped him into the staunch conservative he is today.

Torres is working hard to secure the Republican nomination -- there are six candidates -- to unseat Democrat U.S. Rep Jim Himes in the Fourth Congressional District.

It would be easier, especially in Bridgeport, to be a Democrat. Hispanics tend to vote Democrat. And, in fact, at one point Torres himself was a Democrat.

Not any more. Not after living across the street from the P.T. Barnum housing complex in Section 8 housing -- housing subsidized by the government -- after he father moved the family back to the U.S. from Cuba in 1967.

"I believe in me, I believe in you," Torres said.

"I don't believe in the government. The problem with the government is they don't get it right. I want to fix it and the only way to fix it is to get government out of it."

He wants, he said, to "liberate the people living in public housing ... It was intended to help, but it does the opposite. The children don't see anyone who's never been on welfare. Everyone's been on welfare so long, that's the norm for them."

Torres said he thinks there should be a homesteader plan--if you've lived in public housing for 10 years or more, it's yours.

"Get them off welfare, let them earn as much as they can, and keep as much as they can," he said.

"Open the doors of education. That's what you and I take for granted. That's foreign to them. That's just the way it is and there's no other way to say it better."

He admits that some of his stands are not always popular with his customers, but that doesn't bother him, Torres said, as he points to a man sitting inside.
Rick Torres
"That guy, he's a Socialist." Going against the grain, the accepted way to do things, the easiest way, is not something new for Torres.

The GOP candidate for mayor in 2003, he was ousted in 2007 as chairman of the city's Republican Town Committee after he urged GOP members to switch to Democrat to vote in a primary for mayoral candidate Chris Caruso. Torres said it was the best way to get rid of an entrenched Democratic machine.

As a high school senior, he was offered full college scholarships, so long as he played football or basketball. At age 18, though, his shoulder was shot, his knees were shot, his back hurt. Torres just wanted an education.

He founded himself at the Milford Academy, and bartered the carpentry skills he'd acquired at Bullard -Havens Technical High School to pay his way at the post grad prep school rather than play football, which would have also gotten him a free ride.

Torres found himself the winner of the popularity polls at Bullards-Havens, where he captained the basketball team, played football and was elected as the prom king.

He's also found himself ostracized, and was ready to quite Milford Acemdy after two month when none of his fellow students, all much wealtheir than he was, would even speak to him.

He's had success in business-his Harborview Market received outpouring support from the Black Rock community when he needed zoning variances to stay open. He's also had disappointments-a deal that would have brought a car manufacturer to the city fell through.

Today, Torres said, he is comfortable speaking to any sort of group.

"It's really cool. I can give a talk at the highest level of corporate office," he said, "and then I can go into an inner-city black church and give it again and then I can go into a Hispanic church and give it in Spanish."

Torres said he'd talked to millionaires in Greenwich, and students at Housatonic Community College.

"I give the same talk about small government and free markets," he said. "It's really a decent message."

Until the last election, the district was held by Christopher Shays, who was defeated by Jim Himes.

"I'm not a Chris Shays style representative," Torres said. "I'm not a moderate. I'm a conservative through and through."

He knows that means the Republican organization in the district is leaning toward candidates like Rob Russo and state Rep. Dan Debicella, who follow the Shays ideology.

But, he's raised about $50,000 and said there are many people in Fairfield County who agree with him. "I've found a gold vein, so to speak," Torres said. "I think we're going to strike it rich."

His goal is to raise "at least" $300,000 for the primary.

And he has no doubt that not only will he win a Republican primary, he'll win back the seat for the party.

PRESS RELEASE: Rick Torres contrasts himself from competitors

Rick Torres, candidate in Connecticut’s 4th Congressional district, today highlighted what he believes to be the critical distinctions between him and his rivals in the race.

“While I believe anyone who runs for office to better our country deserves respect, only certain policies warrant support,” Torres said. “Labels are too often misleading, which is why policies matter.”

To illustrate, Torres points to a recent press release by rival Rob Merkle, who professes to be a fiscal conservative. In the release, Merkle claims to be a ‘”small business owner who strives to reduce the size, reach and burden of the federal government.”

“His policies do anything but reduce the size of government,” Torres notes. “He is merely another big-government Republican.”

Torres points to just two of the many big government solutions Merkle advocates:
1. In a poor attempt to 'help' the economy, Merkle praises the SBA loan program. “The Small Business Administration is a government agency which actually takes taxpayer monies and decides who to loan it to. It is another form of corporate welfare,” Torres says.

2. Another of Merkle’s poor attempts to revive the economy is virtually identical to the 'jobs plan' of Barack Obama. It is to “mandate” banks to make loans to small businesses. Torres points out that banks are private enterprises. “Government mandating banks to give loans to property owners resulted in the near collapse of our economy. Yet Merkle wants the government to repeat this same mistake and hopes for a different outcome.”

“These policies led to the budget deficits, tax increases and unemployment we have today. We cannot spend our way out of a recession or tax our way to prosperity. Clearly, a conservative should know this,” Torres asserted.

01/15/10 Press Release From Linda McMahon

Linda McMahon For Senate

Dear Greenwich Roundup --

Rob Simmons is getting nervous. The 38-point lead he enjoyed in September has all but evaporated, according to this week's Quinnipiac Poll. He can't win on the issues because his voting record is grossly out of step with mainstream Republicans. So he's resorted to false attacks on Linda.

'Candidate' Simmons claims he opposes the positions he took in Congress. So which do we believe? Simmons' actions while in Congress or his words now as a candidate in a Republican primary? Actions speak louder than words.

As a career politician, Rob built a record of standing with liberal Democrats in Congress to support budget-busting, job-killing legislation. He twice co-sponsored Card Check legislation, a bill that would force workers to sign a union card in public instead of voting by secret ballot. He partnered with liberal California Democrat Henry Waxman in co-sponsoring Cap-and-Trade climate change legislation, a bill that would raise energy costs in Connecticut, even though the state's energy costs are already among the highest in the nation.

In Congress, Simmons routinely earned 'C' and 'D' grades from the National Taxpayer Union because he voted for more than 350 bills that increased spending and only 13 bills that cut spending. He twice voted to raise the federal debt ceiling ... by more than a Trillion dollars!

It's no wonder Simmons doesn't want to talk about issues. Instead he's been misleading Connecticut voters for months by falsely claiming Linda has only voted twice in her life -- even though he knows it isn't true.

Simmons' False Campaign Attacks: "[Linda McMahon] voted only twice in her life" and "Because of [Linda's] failure to vote more than twice in her life...Republicans have reason to question [her] commitment to the Republican Party."

The Truth: According to the Greenwich Registrar of Voters, Linda "has been a registered voter [in Connecticut] since October 9, 1984 and has voted in the following elections: 11/07/2000, 11/5/2002, 11/2/2004, 11/4/2008 and 11/3/2009." It's important to note that Greenwich only keeps voting records going back to 2000.

Linda has been up front with the voters regarding her voting record from the day she announced. She is not running away from her record. Why is Rob Simmons so intent on tearing her down instead of building himself up or discussing HIS record?

Simmons has clearly made a strategic decision to employ an 'anything goes' approach, however dishonorable and deplorable the tactics may be. His deceptive attack on Linda's voting record is patently false, dealing a huge blow to Rob Simmons' credibility.

Linda believes Connecticut voters deserve the truth, not more of the same kind of slash-and-burn politics we've come to expect from career politicians.

She is running for Senate because only an outsider with real conservative values can be trusted to change Washington's failed economic policies.

Ed

01/15/09 MEDIA ALERT: Press Release From Ned Lamont

Dear Greenwich Roundup --

"The early favorite" to win a potential primary.

"A very real possibility" to become the next Governor of Connecticut.

That's how some in the national press have
described our efforts in just the last few days. They're calling us the "early favorite" because they see that Connecticut wants new leadership that won't be tied to entrenched interests and that will be able to shake up state government and get us back on track.

Town support and small contributions have already made a huge difference. But we are going to need you on the team in a committed way if we're going to make this "possibility" a reality -- whether that means taking a leadership role in your town, hosting an event, or signing up to volunteer.

Please take one minute right now to sign up to get involved with Lamont 2010.

Back in November, I announced I was exploring this race because I believed Connecticut needed an outsider with the willingness and ability to bring entrepreneurial leadership to state government, not another politician focused more on the past than on the incredible challenges our state will face over the next four years.

While the last few weeks have seen some potential candidates enter and others leave the stage, my conviction that Connecticut needs a fresh start with this type of leadership has not changed -- it has only grown stronger.

But I know that in order to succeed, I'll need you by my side.
That's why I'm asking you to show your support by signing up to get involved today.

Please sign up here to get involved with Lamont 2010.

All my best,

Ned

P.S. -- We have all been shocked and heartbroken by the effects of the earthquake in Haiti. My thoughts continue to be with the people of Haiti and with so many in Connecticut who have loved ones affected by this tragedy. Right now, the best way to help is to give to one of many organizations who are involved in relief efforts on the ground. Please give if you can:

12/12/09 Linda McMahon Is Gaining Momentum

Linda McMahon For Senate

Dear Brian,

Linda's upstart campaign to end business as usual in Washington and put people back to work is gaining momentum, and it is being fueled equally by growing support among Connecticut voters and impressive reviews by state and national political analysts.

Ten days after announcing 22 first-round endorsements, Linda today released a second round. We are thrilled to announce the support of four Greenwich Republican leaders:

  • Peter Tesei, Greenwich First Selectman
  • Tod Laudonia, Greenwich Tax Collector
  • Dave Theis, Greenwich Board of Selectmen
  • Peter Crumbine, Former Greenwich Selectman

As GOP leaders and activists across Connecticut continue to gravitate toward Linda, her growing momentum is reflected in public polling. The latest Rasmussen Reports Poll shows Linda has increased her lead over Chris Dodd, and now leads him 44% to 38%.

Linda's momentum is being noticed by national media. FOX News' Sean Hannity this week remarked on his show: "She's outpolling Dodd." Pollster Frank Luntz responded, "She's going to do a smackdown" on Dodd.

Respected publications in Washington D.C., this week made clear her campaign is the one to watch. "She's got the right stuff," reports National Journal adding that "the first-time candidate is getting good reviews." The Hill reports that Linda "is quickly becoming the frontrunner in Connecticut's GOP Senate primary." And despite Rob Simmons's non-stop, shameless, negative attacks on Linda, respected Washington Post analyst Chris Cillizza believes Linda will be "hard to caricature."

Meantime, there are signs that Rob Simmons' vote-getting effort to redefine himself as a conservative may be floundering. Columnist Amanda Carpenter this week let the cat out of the bag regarding one of the worst-kept secrets among conservatives both in Connecticut and nationally: Simmons isn't who he claims to be.

In a blurb titled, "Tea Party poser?" Carpenter writes in The Washington Times: "...past positions may come back to haunt Rob Simmons in the Republican primary against Linda McMahon. Mr. Simmons has modeled himself as a movement conservative, even brandishing tea bags and a copy of his pocket Constitution during stump speeches, but his voting record as a member of Congress will give the 'tea party' crowd pause."

Carpenter goes on: "As a member of Congress, Mr. Simmons was a co-sponsor of the House's 'cap and trade' bill and the Employee Free Choice Act, called 'card check' by its opponents. These two pieces of legislation are vehemently opposed by the free-marketers who drive the tea party movement."

Today, as national news outlets report Congress is set to increase the federal debt limit by an astonishing $1.8 trillion, many fiscal conservatives are no doubt troubled to learn that Rob Simmons twice voted to raise the federal debt ceiling -- once by $450 billion and once by $800 billion.

Linda's consistent and principled opposition to job-killing initiatives like Card Check and federal debt increases is bringing into focus the clear contrast between her and her opponents.

Thank you for your support of Linda. With your help, we can and will change the direction of Washington and put Connecticut back to work.
