A Darien man involved in a fatal car accident four years ago was arrested last week for driving while intoxicated.
Charles Benzyk, 25, of Heather Lane was arrested at 1:12 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, after a traffic stop on Noroton Avenue. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to illuminate headlights.
Officers stopped Benzyk’s 2008 Honda Fit while he was driving south on Noroton Avenue near the Post Road without any headlights on, according to Darien police Capt. Fred Komm.
The officers detected an odor of alcohol coming from Benzyk, Komm said, and administered a field sobriety test which he failed. Benzyk was released after posting a $250 bond and is due in court on Oct. 22.
Benzyk’s attorney, Eugene Riccio of Bridgeport-based Gulash & Riccio, said his client’s latest arrest was due to an unfortunate circumstance, but he wouldn’t elaborate.
“It’s a most regrettable situation in that Mr. Benzyk was attempting to help out another person in a difficult situation and as a result of his efforts, he wound up getting in trouble himself,” Riccio said.......
